Talking about break up songs, I think this is one of the most touching and heartbreaking songs I have ever listened.
Daughter is an indie-folk band with Elena Tonra as the main singer. Her unique voice and intonation give this song a really emotional environment since the very very beginning when it is clear the song is talking about all the feelings and emotional states that a person who is struggling after a break down is living, and also ways to overcome this situation.
I like, in particular, the chorus of the song with this famous line
“And if you’re still breathing, you’re the lucky ones,
Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs"
It is referring to everyone who has gone through a moment of sorrow, how a person deals with it, how a part of you has been consumed, and how sometimes it is difficult to even breath.
For me the song is also talking about keep trying, keep living and keep experiencing cause at the end, that is what life is about. I believe that after finishing either a romantic relationship or close any chapter of our lives, sometimes we feel as a silhouette of what we were. We got lost in emotions, we got lost in the people, in the experiences. We lost ourselves so much that takes time to recognize us, to go back and see each other, not because we need to be what we were in the past because growing up is the most important part of living and learning, but because we need to pull ourselves together as individuals to keep moving forward.
When she refers to Youth:
"One day, we’ll reveal the truth
That one will die before he gets there”
This verse is magnificent. The "truth:, this incomprehensible truth that we all are looking for... this truth that is gonna die before we get to it. She confirms one of the biggest fear for humankind: growing older without accomplishing or living what we pursue. All the dreams that will die on the way...
I was listening to this song in different periods of my life, this is not a song of the week, this is a song for any day. I have been enjoying it since the first time and I hope I will be enjoying for longer.
I think it is very hard for me to put in words all the things I feel when I listen to this melody. For me, it is not only talking about a love story break up, but many things in your life can also lead you to fell not part of the 'lucky ones' which are still bleeding.
I can't put a score over 10, cause this song deserves a golden mark.
